I have chosen a very competitive industry to work in (marketing and advertising) and when studying I quickly realised that a degree and good grades wasn’t enough to obtain a job. A marketing position opened up in Enactus ECU and I saw this as a great opportunity to get more experience. My time with Enactus turned out to be so much more than I expected. I have pushed my limits, become a better leader and found amazing friends whilst helping my local community and the environment. My dream job is to work as an account planner for an advertising agency. I also want to have lived and worked in 5 different countries (currently 3 and counting) and to be able to run 5 kilometres in under 22 minutes!

I was born in the Philippines but have spent the past 13 years of my life in Perth, Western Australia. I have just recently completed my Bachelor of Business majoring in Accounting in June 2016. I have really enjoyed the last year of university, as I was very fortunate to get involved with Enactus ECU. Enactus gave me the opportunity to contribute to my community in a positive way. Interacting with our senior citizens gave me a sense of fulfilment that I was able to help them transition to our fast paced digital world. Furthermore, I was able to form great and long-lasting friendships with my fellow team members. My passion is to pursue my career in business and accounting whilst travelling the world and at the same time trying to make a difference in this world that we live in.

Volunteering for socio-economic causes has been one of my greatest commitments in life. Born and raised in Sri Lanka, it was difficult to ignore the hardships affecting people around you. I am also a passionate advocate for education, science, social justice and leadership. Enactus is probably the only student organisation in the world that addresses all these issues, so I decided to join. My experience with Enactus ECU has been wonderful. Impacting people’s lives and empowering them to find their strength to stand is a massive achievement in life. Finding friends who are like minded and always ready to walk the extra mile with you is like discovering a treasure. I not only see myself just as a medical scientist, but as an individual who can impact many lives and inspire a generation whom are yet to discover the true meaning of compassion, love and kindness.

At first joining Enactus ECU was all about getting volunteer work on my resume. But I soon learned that was just a bonus. I am a very outgoing and passionate individual who would love to start up my own organisation in the tourism industry back in my motherland Sri Lanka. Enactus gives me the necessary training and backing needed for me to achieve this goal. Enactus has also taught me that it’s not only profitability that matters, but also making difference in the world and making it a better place. I have been a part of Enactus for one and a half years and the experience I have gained from it is absolutely amazing. I have also made lifelong friends and influenced world change.

I joined Enactus ECU to help give back to my local community and to meet new people as I was new to Perth. Enactus has provided me with many great opportunities to expand my skills set and meet people from all walks of life some of which I can call my close friends today. The journey I have undergone whilst volunteering has been full of incredible people and valuable experiences, some of which have been difficult at times. Valuable skills such as time management and interpersonal skills have been a strong part of my role as the digital media manager and secretary and I hope to sharpen these further in the future.

When I joined Enactus ECU, all I wanted was a reason to step outside the house and volunteering seemed like a great way to spend my time. However, Enactus has given me more than just that. I made friends who are just as passionate about helping the community and making a difference. To me, the concept of entrepreneurial action to help the community is realistic and sustainable in today’s world. I believe that food is one of the best things in life and I show my gratitude by finishing every bit of food left on my plate. Hence, the Waste Not project is of great interest to me. I also grew up surrounded by nature so my love and care for the environment comes naturally. Working with people who are also concerned about the growing issue of food waste also keeps me motivated and moving forward. I am very passionate about nursing. I aspire to become a mental health nurse because I believe that healthier minds equate to happier lives of the people.
