What is Be Safe?

Australian beaches are renowned for their natural beauty and scenic views, but they can also be incredibly dangerous. In the last decade alone, 201 international visitors have drowned on Australian beaches, and 1 in every 4 drownings in Australian waters are people born overseas. These frightening statistics highlight the country’s significant coastal drowning issue, which is largely attributed to a lack of knowledge and education regarding the dangers and strength of the waves at Australian beaches, limited swimming skills, and a lack of beach safety awareness and knowledge.

As per a recent research by Royal Life Saving Society – Australia’s Stacey Willcox-Pidgeon said ” The research found international visitors had unique safety needs based on their purpose of travel, country of origin, location they are visiting and aquatic activities they are undertaking. These findings support the need for tailored prevention programs to increase water safety for our international visitors.” Read more

Here’s where the “Be Safe” project comes in. Enactus ECU partnered up with Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club where Our goal is to prevent international students from drowning on Australian beaches through adequate beach safety education. Our one-day course is designed to help increase beach safety knowledge and awareness by teaching students the importance of swimming between the flags on the beach, knowing where the lifeguard tower is located, how to recognize dangerous rips and waves, and how to swim out of a rip successfully. In addition, students will receive an introductory first aid training course, learn which animals to avoid on the sand and in the water, and experience some Australian culture with a classic sausage sizzle and a drink.
